Cannon, L. Carl age 85 of Alcoa, went to be with his heavenly father on Thursday, October 11, 2001. He was a forty-six year member of First Baptist Alcoa. Mr. Cannon was the son of the late W. Fred and Dorothy Medlin Cannon. He was preceded in death by: Son, Donald Wayne Cannon; Brothers, Raymond Cannon, Dr. Calvin Cannon; Sister, Mae Logan. Mr. Cannon was born in McMinn County on May 10, 1916. He was Valedictorian at Claxton High School. He graduated from Tennessee Wesleyan College and earned a Masters degree plus 45 hours from the University of Tennessee. Early in his career Mr. Cannon taught school at Calhoun, Tennessee. He retired from the Aluminum Company of America where he worked as an Industrial Engineer and belonged to the 25 year club. He was a member for over 30 continuous years in the brotherhood of Lota Lambda Sigma Fraternity. Mr. Cannon was also a member of the American Institute of Industrial Engineers, American Vocational Association, Tennessee Vocational Association, and First Baptist Alcoa Believers Group. He was elected Justice of the Peace for McMinn County. Mr. Cannon enjoyed traveling after he retired. Accompanied by his loving wife, he traveled throughout the lower 48 states and Canada.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Sally Breeden Cannon of Alcoa; two daughters and one son-in-law, Doris Poppelreiter, Margaret and Wallace Ogle of Maryville; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Gary Dale Cannon of Seymour, William Carl and Marilyn Cannon of Maryville, Roger Anthony and Joni Cannon of Murfreesboro; four grand-daughters, Sandra Cannon Price, Deborah Ogle Ernsberger, Sarah Cannon, Leiah Cannon; four Grandsons, William Carl Cannon Jr., Gregory Cannon, Eric Daniel Poppelreiter, Brian Dale Poppelreiter; five Great Grandchildren; Sisters and Brothers-in-law, Grace and Harold Womac of Athens, Nell and Theodore Mackey of Charleston, Hazel and Jimmy Johnson of Athens; Brother and Sister-in- law, Clarence and Velma Cannon of Hixon. Carl Cannon was a devoted husband and father. His faith in God and family were the most important things in his life. His family will celebrate his life on Sunday, October 14, 2001. Funeral service will be at 3:00 PM, Sunday, October 14, 2001 in the Trinity Chapel of Smith Mortuary with Rev. Richard Holden officiating. Interment will follow in Grandview Cemetery. The family has requested that memorials be made to First Baptist Church Alcoa, 819 Gilbert Street, Alcoa, TN 37701. Family will receive friends from 2:00 until 3:00 PM, Sunday, October 14, 2001, Trinity Chapel, Smith Mortuary, Maryville, 865- 983-1000.
