Wreck kills Dollywood safety chief
July 16, 2001
A one-car accident claimed the life of a top Dollywood employee Friday evening.
Jeffery Hatcher, 45, died when his Ford Taurus slid into a tree not far from his home on Covemont Road in Wears Valley.
Hatcher was Dollywood's safety and security director. He had worked for Dollywood for 30 years, including summer jobs as a teen-ager.
"He was coming down the hill and from what we could see, the car starting sliding sideways," said Sgt. David Robertson of Sevier County Sheriff's Department, who responded to the accident. The driver's side of the car struck the tree, killing Hatcher.
The Wears Valley Fire Department, Sevier County Ambulance Authority and the Tennessee Highway Patrol also responded to the accident, Robertson said. The first call to the sheriff's department came in at 9:21 p.m.
Hatcher was wearing his seatbelt, and alcohol is not believed to be a factor, Robertson said.
He leaves his wife, Suzi Early Hatcher, a former Mountain Press staff writer; and two sons, Adam and Justin.
