  The 1880 census of St. Louis, Missouri, shows W. R. Mateer aged 46 years living on Compton Avenue with a wife Martha A. Mateer aged 36 and three sons, John E. aged 12, Harold D. aged 10 and William R. aged 4 years. In this particular census two enumerations were made for the City of St. Louis; on 2 June 1880 Will R. Metire was listed as an Indian Agent; on 10 Novemeber 1880 W. R. Mateer was designated as a traveling salesman; both were at the Compton address with approximately identical families.
