William Charles “Charlie” Sims was born in the Catlettsburg Community on June 8, 1878. He was a son of Civil War veteran Reuben Chesley Sims (December 12, 1842-Dec 3, 1922) and Sarah Ann Childness Russell Sims (January 9, 1852-August 22, 1893) a daughter of a widely known minister, Rev. John “Uncle Jackie” Russell. His siblings included Annie (Clark), Elizabeth ‘Epsie” ( Drinnen ), Mary Francis(Newcomb), Clayton Sims, and Mack Sims. He had one sister, Lela (Taylor) from his father’s second marriage to Sallie Caughron and a brother, R.C. “Sam”, from his father’s third marriage to Cordelia “Cordie” Tarwater.
Charlie enlisted in U.S. Army and served in Co. M., 46th Volunteer Regiment of Infantry during the Spanish-American War. While stationed in the Philippine Islands, he contacted Malaria and subsequently suffered from the effects the remainder of his life.
He returned to Sevierville and married Ada Henry on July 29, 1905. Ada Henry was born in the Wilhite Community on May 31, 1887. She was a daughter of Berry Henry (August 2, 1850- June 25, 1897) and Rhoda Hurst Henry (June. 5, 1850 – June. 28, 1933). Her siblings included: Catherine (Etherton ), Nancy (Williams), Cena (McCarter), Margaret (Connaster), Molly(Hurst)), Bertie (Fox), Carroll Henry and Levator Henry
Charlie and Ada Sims were the parents of four children; Anna Mae (February 18, 1907 –November 16, 2004, married Ray Ward), Lucy Catherine (July 18, 1909 – February 22, 1974, married John Thomas Chance and Willard Whaley), Nina Rue (May 1, 1911 – March 29, 1933, married Stewart Williams) and William Charles “Bub” Sims, Jr. (February 11, 1913- Jul. 22, 1972, married Theo Smith). Ada died on February 22, 1930. She was buried in the Alder Branch Cemetery.
Charlie desired adventure and managed to find employment in several diverse locations around the southeast including Jellico, Tennessee (building the first road across Jellico Mountain), Muscle Shoals, Alabama (on the Wilson Dam), Old Hickory, Tennessee (at the DuPont munitions plant during World War 1), and Johnson City ( on a building at East Tennessee State University). Ada did not enjoy the nomadic lifestyle and eventually persuaded Charlie to return to Sevierville. Charlie acquired a keen interest in local politics and served as a deputy for his cousin, Sheriff Russell Allen.
Charlie’s second marriage was to Jessie McAmos of Morristown They were married on April 2, 1930 and had one daughter, June Jewel Dean (April 11, 1931 –October 7, 1993, married Audie Rosenbalm). The marriage ended in divorcee.
On October 6, 1931, Charlie Sims married Lela Rosetta Gibson. Lela was born April. 10, 1907 to John Pleas Gibson and Margaret Ellen England Gibson. Her siblings were: Marshall Gibson, Irene (Ricketts) and Bessie Gibson. After the death of Charlie’s daughter Nina, Charlie and Lela adopted Nina’s five week old daughter, Louise (born February 25, 1933, married Clyde McMahan). Charlie died January 26, 1938 and was buried in the Alder Branch Cemetery. Lela died on October 5, 1979 at the age of 72. She is buried in the Shiloh Cemetery.
