Estelle Atkerson, 88, of Amarillo, died Sunday, Oct. 7, 2007.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Dreamland Cemetery with Dr. David Lowrie, pastor of First Baptist Church, officiating. Arrangements are by Brooks Funeral Directors, 1702 Fifth Ave., Canyon.
Estelle Atkerson was born on April 3, 1919, to Lillie Mae and William Andrew McCarter in Bowie. She married Onnie L. Atkerson on Jan. 6, 1962, in Clovis, N.M.
Estelle moved to Canyon in 1931. During World War II, she worked at Pantex and following World War II, she worked for Beers Marine Company as a bookkeeper and parts person.
Estelle volunteered at VA Medical Center as a commander of DAV Women's Auxiliary Volunteer Services with more than 50,000 hours to her credit. She was also the mascot for Women's Veterans of America. Estelle was a gracious housewife and friend.
She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers; Eldon McCarter, Roy McCarter, Ray McCarter, and Carroll Lee McCarter; and two sisters, Willie Huskey and Waunita Brown.
Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Cristi Woods and husband Wayne of Amarillo; a grandson, Brandon Woods; two brothers, Bill McCarter of Lockney, and Sherman McCarter of Canyon; several nieces and nephews.
The family suggests memorials be sent to the Estelle Atkerson Memorial Fund, DAV Chapter 26 Fund; Attention: Maxine Brandon, 6010 Amarillo Blvd. West, Amarillo, TX 79106.
