David W. Proffitt, a former leader of the United Presbyterian Church in the United States, died Wednesday at his home in Maryville, Tenn. He was 96 years old.
Mr. Proffitt was a prominent east Tennessee merchant and civic leader who in 1956 became the first businessman ever to hold the position of Moderator, the highest elective position in the Presbyterian Church.
During the term of President Dwight D. Eisenhower, Mr. Proffitt served as a lay preacher on several occasions at Washington's National Presbyterian Church, the Eisenhower family church in the capital.
Mr. Proffitt was the founder of a chain of department stores that bear his name. The first Proffitt's opened in 1919 in Maryville. There are now five Proffitt's stores in east Tennessee.
He was also a founder and director of the First Federal Savings and Loan Association in Maryville.
Mr. Proffitt is survived by three sons, Harwell and Jack of Maryville, and Richard Neil of Manhattan, and a daughter, Mrs. Harry Lyle, of Maryville.
