Charles Kenneth McDowell, former Friendsville postmaster, city commissioner and mayor, died Tuesday at Blount Memorial Hospital. He was 85.
Born in Alcoa, McDowell eventually moved to Friendsville, where he attended Friendsville School and the Quaker Academy for several years. After stints as a machinist in a shipyard and as a machine gunner in the U.S. Army during World War II, McDowell moved back to the little town he loved, according to his wife of 62 years, Betty Henry McDowell.
“While he was working in the post office, he decided that the town needed street lights, but had no way to pay for them,” Betty McDowell said. “At first, he would ‘go begging’ for the money for the lights.”
McDowell, Ben Hargis and others decided the best way to pay for the street lights was to incorporate the city. Betty McDowell said her husband wrote the city charter, while a group of residents, including Hargis, got it approved. The town was incorporated, according to historians, on April 23, 1953.
Funeral services will be held at 8 p.m. this evening at Memorial Funeral Home and a military graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Unitia Cemetery.
