Funeral planned for child
SEVIERVILLE - A 7-year-old who died in an all-terrain-vehicle mishap on New Year's Eve was the victim of a tragic accident, authorities said Tuesday.
Detective Stephanie McClure investigated the accident, and said it appeared that Michael David Ogle was riding alone on the vehicle when it apparently stalled and rolled backwards down an embankment and struck a fence. The child, his father and other relatives were on family property, and his father had been letting the boy ride nearby while they worked on a house there that they were renovating, McClure said.
"The son just asked if he could make a loop or two himself," the officer said. The boy's father, David Ogle, heard the engine stall and immediately went to check on him, she said.
Michael David Ogle died at Fort Sanders Sevier Medical Center as a result of his injuries. His funeral service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday in the chapel of Atchley Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Oldham's Creek Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Atchley Funeral Home in Sevierville.
"The family is just devastated," McClure said.
It's a misdemeanor violation for a child under 16 years of age to operate an ATV, McClure said, but the sheriff's department does not anticipate filing charges in this case.
