Evans, Gladys I. –age 89, departed this life at 10:00 Sunday night, August 13, 2006 at Brakebill Convalescent Center, as the Angels of Heaven lovingly carried her to her home of eternal rest. She was born October 11, 1916 in Lenoir City, Tennessee to parents, C.W. Wright and Tennie E. Wright. Gladys was a longtime member of Southside Baptist Church, Knoxville. Preceded in death by husband of 52 years, Ray C. Evans; son, Don R. Evans; grandchildren, Cathy Williams and Stephen Evans; brothers, Fred A. Wright and Earl W. Wright.
Survivors
Surviving family includes son, Jack Evans, Rockford; daughter, Barbara “Jeanie” and husband, Harold Underwood, Knoxville; daughter-in-law, Carol H. Evans, Kentucky; granddaughters, Vicki Underwood, Knoxville; Amy Underwood, Charleston, South Carolina; Tanya Oxendine, Maryville; grandsons, Donnie and wife, Rhonda Evans, Maryville; Jim and wife, Melissa Underwood, Knoxville; several great-grandchildren. Special note of thanks to Cyndie VanSchaick for playing the keyboard and accordian for mom as she awaited her home going; Brakebill Convalescent Center staff and nurses for their compassionate care. Also the University Health System for their excellent care as well. Special people involved in Mom’s life over the years include sister-in-law, Katie Wright, Kingston; Audene Evans, Leroy and Sybil Logan, Jackson, Mississippi; her Sunday School class and teacher, Helen Green; friends, Mary Lou Roberts; Mary Jones; Steve and Retha Smith; and entire congregation of her church.
Service
The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM on Wednesday, Berry Funeral Home Chapel, Chapman Highway, with funeral service to follow at 8 PM, Rev. Clarence Gresham officiating. Family and friends will meet at Sherwood Memorial Gardens, Alcoa Highway, on Thursday for 11 AM committal and interment services. Memorials may be made to Southside Baptist Church Missions Fund, 1620 W. Governor John Sevier Highway, Knoxville, Tennessee 37920.
