Vernon Edsel Thomas, age 80, of Dandridge, passed away Saturday, January 10, 2009. He was an employee of Pemberton Truck Lines. He was preceded in death by his, two sisters, Eula Mae Thomas Greene, Elree Thomas Blazer and one brother, Billy Thomas. He is survived by his wife, Helen Mantooth Thomas, of Dandridge; son, Ron Thomas, of Cookeville, TN; daughter, Rita Thomas McNabb and husband Jim, of Newport; brother Fred Thomas and his wife, Jean, of Sevierville, TN; sister, Margaret Thomas Russell and husband, Kenneth, of Chestnut Hill, TN; two grandchildren, Michael Thomas, of Cookeville, TN, and Josh Reed, of Newport; also other family and friends. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, 8:00 pm January 13, 2009 in Manes Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Rick Spell and Rev. Mike Hensley officiating. Burial will be 11:00 am Wednesday, January 14, 2009 in Resthaven Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 5-8 pm Tuesday at Manes Funeral Home prior to the funeral services.

Dandridge man dies in Saturday crash
KNOXVILLE-A Dandridge man died Saturday night and two other people were injured in a one-vehicle accident on Interstate-40, near the Strawberry Plains Exit.
The victim was identified as Vernon Thomas, 80, of Dandridge. Thomas' wife, Helen, 68, and Bob Layman, 73, also of Dandridge, were passengers in the vehicle and were taken to University of Tennessee Medical Center.
Thomas was reportedly eastbound on I-40 during heavy rains when his 2003 Cadillac hydroplaned, went off an embankment and struck a tree. Among his survivors is Rita McNabb, Cocke County Coordinated Schools Health Director.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, the former Laura Jane Parrott, daughter of the late Rev. and Mrs. Lowell Parrott.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Manes Funeral Home in Newport.
Funeral services will follow in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Rick Spell and the Rev. Mike Hensley officiating.
Burial will be 11 a.m. Wednesday in Resthaven Memorial Gardens.
