CAPPS, DR. CLYDE LEE JR. - of Maryville TN, age 74, passed away on May 2nd 2005.
Preceded in death by his parents Mary and Clyde Lee Capps, Sr.
He is survived by his beloved wife Annie and a devoted blended family: his children Lee Capps and wife Pat, Steve Capps and wife Marina, Laura Morris and husband Steve, and their mother Dottie Lamb; his stepchildren Scott McInturff, and Eric McInturff and his wife Leslie; his grandchildren Adam and Shannon Capps and expected granddaughter of Steve and Marina; grandchildren Sean and Nicholas McInturff, and Hannah and Sarah McInturff.
Dr. Capps was a graduate of Central High School of Knoxville 1948, the University of Tennessee 1950, and the University of Tennessee Medical School Memphis 1953. He was a Commander in the US Navy from 1954 to 1960, completing his residency in Anesthesiology at Massachusetts General in Boston. In 1961 he returned with his family to Knoxville to practice Anesthesiology at Baptist Hospital where he enjoyed a distinguished career, becoming a Diplomat of the American Board of Anesthesiology. He and Dr. Horace Yarberry pioneered the first intensive care unit in Knoxville at Baptist Hospital. Following the arrival of Dr. Ronald Yatteau, Dr. Capps joined Dr. Ed Ware and Dr. Gator Greene in the first open heart operation at Baptist Hospital. In 1979 he became the medical director of the first local drug and alcohol treatment unit at St. Mary's Hospital where he worked for ten years before his retirement. Among his many accomplishments he was an eagle scout, chairman of the Retired Physicians Advisory Council at Baptist Hospital, and enjoyed a lifetime hobby of amateur radio maintaining his call letters "W4LWF" for over 55 years. During his retirement he continued to counsel and help others live with the disease of alcoholism. Throughout his life and career Dr. Capps was a talented physician, a skilled counselor, a loving husband, a devoted father and grandfather. Dr. Capps was a very special man who touched the lives of many people. His contributions made this world a better and brighter place. He will be especially missed by his friends and colleagues at East Tennessee Baptist Hospital, his radio buddies, his pulmonary rehab group, and many wonderful friends. Dr. Capps donated his body to Quillen Medical School at East Tennessee State University.
A celebration of his life will be held Friday, May 6, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Central Baptist Church of Bearden (6300 Deane Hill Drive).
