NOLAND - Seeking info on the parents of Martha (Polly) Ownby NOLAND. She was the first wife of Jefferson Reed NOLAND, and the mother of Walter Lee NOLAND. She died giving birth to her second child (daughter) about the year 1900. Reed's brother Mark L. NOLAND had his wife to die at the same time. The only survivor of the two mothers and infants was Charlie NOLAND. He lived in the Glades area of Sevier County. I need any information I can get about his birth date, mother, resting place, and date of death. I am the great-grandson of "Polly" and "Reed" NOLAND. Dennis J. Noland, 10809 Meadow Road West, Greenback, TN 37742 email: Deno4l3@webtv.net (Ed. Note: See pages 414-444 of "In The Shadow of The Smokies".)

VANCE - I have researched the VANCE's who helped build Pittman Center and have lived and died there but the VANCE's have seemed to drop off the face of the earth! Their house still stands on Copeland. It is the Andy VANCE house. Can anyone tell me where to get info? Any direction will help. Thanks. Deborah Vance, P0 Box 773, Spindale, NC 28160 email: dvance@blueridge.net

McCOIG - Looking for any info concerning a William McCOIG buried in Chestnut Hill, TN. He was born on 4 March 1870 and died on 18 January1929. I believe he ran a store in Chestnut Hill with his sister. Any info on this man would be a godsend. It is believed he was not married. Thank you. Bonnie Banks, 1048 Spanish Wells Drive, Melbourne. LARGE / WILLIAMS - I am seeking info on Malinda LARGE born 1855 daughter of Perry LARGE and Nancy McMahan. She had three sons, Perry LARGE, James Pinkney LARGE & Simeon LARGE. She later married William 'Bill' WILLIAMS or George 'Sasser' WILLIAMS, so I have been told from several sources. Can anyone out there clear this up for me? Who was the father of her first three sons? Which Williams did she marry? She had Walter WILLIAMS 1882; Ida WILLIAMS 1887; Mark WILLIAMS 1892; Luther WILLIAMS 1891. I also would like information on these children. I have been told that Ida was murdered by her husband in Massachusetts. HELP. Lee Clayton, 6960 West Peoria Avenue, Lot 114, Peoria. AZ 85345 6027 email: jnlc766@cs.com

CROOK / WILLIS - Looking for info on the WILLIS family of Cocke Co. and/or Sevier and Unicoi Counties. Andrew Jackson, my g-grandfather, is buried in Del Rio. His first wife was Leah CROOK. I don't know where her family came from-NC or GA?? According to my records, A.J. and Leah had nine children: Hardy Osborne, Nicholas, Lester, Joe, Dora, Elizabeth, John, Julius, and Lee. Hardy's first wife (name unknown) died and he married Rebecca Sams. They are buried in a small cemetery in Batesville, Ark. Who was his first wife, and who were the wives/husbands of the others? Joe moved to GA. After Leah and A.J. divorced she moved to GA to live with Joe. They are buried there. Who was A. J.'s 2nd wife? They married (?) after his children were grown because, when Hardy's first wife died, his children from that marriage lived with A.J. and Leah until Hardy remarried. Hardy's daughter, who was alive and living in Mountain Home, Ark. told me that A.J. and Leah divorced when she was very small and it really upset her and her siblings. A.J.'s family moved to Cocke County from Unicoi County. I think they were originally from NC. How are they related to the Willis family that moved from NC to LA? BALLARD - According to the story passed down by Polk BALLARD, son of Benjamin Franklin BALLARD, who was born about 1835 in SC, Benjamin was a teamster during the Civil War and had been selling horses from the north to the south and visa versa. Accused of being a horse thief he was finally caught and hanged in or around Gatlinburg, TN where it is suspected he went to live with an uncle, brother or sister and family. He stated that he had borrowed the horse in question and that the man that owned the horse never did like him. Can anyone confirm this?
