GANN - My name is Oscar Castaneda, and I am a native of the Rio Grande Valley. I am a grandson of Pete W. GANN. His discharge records indicate that he was a farmer, born in Sevierville, Tennessee. This letter is a solicitation for the info needed to place an order for a military government headstone for Mr. GANN, who was a World War I veteran. Mr. GANN was employed by the city of Brownsville as a jailer, and was a common law spouse to my grandmother, Natividad L. Loya. My father, Pete GANN, Jr., was born a year before the death of Mr. GANN. My grandmother married Luis L. Castaneda, a native of Mercedes, Texas, shortly after my grandfather died. Since Mr. Castaneda never had any children, he adopted my father by the name of Pedro Castaneda. Knowledge of Mr. GANN was never kept a secret, however, and my father kept a picture of him. This picture is now in my possession. Mr. GANN was buried on January 10, 1926, in Brownsville, (Cameron County) Texas. He was buried in Buena Vista Burial Park, on Lot #186 Fairview Section (Grave #4), with full military honors, but never had a grave marker placed on his grave. I have a certified copy of Mr. GANN's Honorable Discharge papers from the Cameron County courthouse. This document shows proof that Mr. Pete W. GANN enlisted in the United States Army on May 22, 1917, in Highmore, SD, at the age of twenty-six. His discharge was on the 25th day of June 1919 at Fort Ogalethorpe, GA. These dates indicate that his date of birth was approximately between January and May of 1891. My family and I would greatly appreciate help from all sources and records that are available. Thank you for your time. Oscar Castaneda, 1145 South Texas Ave. Mercedes, TX 78570
TRADE TOKENS - I am seeking any history on general stores in Tennessee and in particular those stores which used tokens. In some areas tokens were called Doogaloo, light money, script and other names. Stores used tokens when hard cash was difficult to come by. If a farmer or someone else went to the store to sell something the merchant would buy what he had for sale with tokens with the merchants name on them. This was done all over the state from before the turn of the century until up into the 1950's. I will pay for postage and copying which you can send me on any general store from your area, whether they used tokens or not. This is our state history which is fading fast. My deepest appreciation is extended to you for any assistance you may render. Joe C. Copeland, P.O. Box 4221, Oak Ridge, TN 37831 email: joenatca@juno.com
