LAYMAN/WHALEY - I am seeking information on John and Dovie James LAYMAN and names of their children. A daughter, Elizabeth M. LAYMAN, b.23 April, 1865, was m.25 November, 1888 to Pinkney H. WHALEY. They lived in Big Greenbrier Cove. Elizabeth died there 26 July, 1894 and was buried in Plemmons Cemetery. She had two children, Joel "Joe" Commodore and Florence Elizabeth. BAKER - Trying to gather family history of an uncle born in late 1800's or early 1900's in or around Sevierville. His name was Claude Stuart BAKER. Had a sister who married a Carr. They moved to possibly Oklahoma in 1890's then to Anthony, KS where they ran a variety store for years. Claude enlisted in the Navy in 1916 from Anthony, KS, back to KS in 1918; returned to Sevierville 1920 to visit relatives. BRADLEY - My great great grandfather, Andrew Jackson BRADLEY, was buried in Great Smoky Mountain National Park near Gatlinburg. He was b.28 Dec. 1814 on Bradley Forks on the Ocona Lufty River, now Smokemont. His son, Asbury was my ancestor. He settled in Tow String in Swain Co., NC. I can't find anything more on him. CUNNINGHAM - Need information on the CUNNINGHAM family who resided on Gap Creek of Boyds Creek in Sevier County in the early days. This family descends from John CUNNINGHAM who held a grant in Sevier Co. on Gap Creek in 1806. John died in 1832. His descendants are listed in the 1850 census as John CUNNINGHAM and Langston CUNNINGHAM. Probably the eldest John CUNNINGHAM was a son of Christopher CUNNINGHAM of Washington County. CARNES/LOVELADY/HELTON - Researching descendants of Amos and Clara LOVELADY. In particular, I would like to contact descendants of LOVELADY's grand daughter Clara V. HELTON (b.9 July, 1871) in Sevier CO., d.5 March 1932 in Knoxville, and is buried at Shiloh Cemetery in Sevier Co. Clara was the daughter of W. Robert and Nancy LOVELADY HELTON. Clara V. m. James B. LEAKE - We are trying to find a house that was located near the Alder Branch Church, outside Sevierville. The house belonged to the LEAKE family supposedly during the Civil War and well into the 20th Century. Mr. LEAKE, who was my grandfather, married a TYSON, and after her death, an Ellis. My grandmother, Molly LEAKE Tinsley, told my sister she remembered singing for the soldiers during the war, and also hiding from them. She was born in 1858. The house was sold after my parents marriage in 1919. I don't know who bought the house, but I think it was still standing in the late 50's, and perhaps still occupied. LONG/MAPLES - Would like to correspond and share with any family or researchers of Rev. George LONG b.1771 VA, m. Nancy Elizabeth MAPLES 9 June 1791, Pittsylvania County, VA. Rev LONG moved to Sevier Co. in 1799 and began preaching in 1800 at the Providence Baptist Church. He preached there until 1820 when he and his children moved to McMinn Co. TN. HICKMAN - I am seeking information on my grandfather HICKMAN's family. William Henderson HICKMAN was b. May 10, 1863 in Strawberry Plains, TN. Came to Missouri when he was in his 20's, married here, then returned to TN where four of his children were born. According to his obituary, he taught math at an academy at Sevierville. About 1902 he and his family returned to Missouri. His father was Thomas HICKMAN, who served in the Civil War Co.G-9 TN Cavalry, under Lt. Samuel Bell. His mother was Virginia Hamilton. I know my grandfather had a sister "Cordie" who m. James Kindrick Underwood. Another sister was Sallie, who d. Mar 30, 1913, and who was married to Perry Atchley, and then to Alfred Smith, according to a book by Susan Province, entitled "HICKMAN". A brother, John H. died Dec.6, 1905. WALKER - Researching WALKERs, especially my Great, great, great grandfather Thomas H. WALKER (1817-1880). He lived in Yell Co. AR from about 1856 to 1880. His Civil War military records state in the enlistment papers that his place of birth was Sevier Co. TN. He served in Co. H, 3rd AR Cav., USA. Thomas H. and wife Malissa Dicey 1819-1880 b. SC) are in the 1850 Gibson, Co. TN census. Family records say Thomas was son of John Frianch WALKER and Margerieys F, both b. NC. Family records say J.F.W. b.7 Sept 1797. Solomon's next wife was Martha MOWERY, probably the third one. He died in Anderson Co. TN after 1880, buried in Sharon Baptist Church Cemetery, Knox Co. TN. BOYD - Seeking information on this family and the earliest ancestor we can find is Daniel G. BOYD who m. Nancy Ann Britton May 28, 1840 in Greenville, TN. (I have a copy of marriage certificate). According to Census they were in Cocke County in 1850 with five children. Couldn't locate them in 1860, but they reappear in 1870, in Sevier Co. After that we lose them, and know nothing of what happened to any of the rest except for my direct ancestor, James Lafayette BOYD, the 2nd son of Daniel and Nancy. He was in DeWitt, AR in 1870, married to Sally Foster. His descendants still live in Pulaski Co. AR. J.L. was in Confederate Army and married Sally in Spartanburg, SC. WOOD - Looking for information on Henry WOOD b.1767. Moved from Canton, NC 1822 to Cullowhee area and was a founder of the Baptist Church there. He married Margaret (Peggy) Bryson. Both are buried in Cullowhee Baptist Cemetery. Most of the WOODs were from Caney Fork except Andrew Jackson WOOD who was from the Canada section. TOWNSEND - Looking for ancestors and descendants of John TOWNSEND b.ca.1813 NC. He is listed with wife Polly (b.16 Dec.1813 NC) in the 1850 Cocke Co. TN census with the following: Penelope 16, James 14, William 12, Philip 10, Nancy 4, Mary 9/12, and Baldridge, Nancy 70 (Polly's mother or grandmother?) His family is listed in the 1860 Cocke Co. census next to his son James, (24) and wife Mary E. (18) and their son William D. (1). John (d.8 Jan 1890) and Mary "Polly" (d.25 Apr.1875) were charter members of the Shady Grove Baptist Church and are buried in the Shady Grove Cemetery in Sevier County. David L.
