STINNETT - Does anyone have the key(s) that I need? John STINNETT was on the 1790 Census for Rowan Co. NC along with a William STINNETT of comparable age. William appears immediately after Jeremiah King. John appears a few lines later. John was traced to Cocke and Sevier Cos. TN subsequently. This William just might be the link that I have been seeking. The circumstances: Henry STINNETT arrived in Pope Co. AR from TN before the 1830 Census. About the same time a John STINNETT, a Baley STINNETT and a William STINNETT (b no earlier than 1760) arrived. Henry, John and Baley were of comparable age. William was about 20 years older. Henry STINNETT is said (I haven't seen the proof) to have married an Esther Chaney (of whatever spelling). Cheynes, also, were in the area. A son carried a middle name of Chaney. A John William(s) STINNETT, in an interview, claimed an Esther Cheny (sic) as his mother and that he was born in Cocke Co. TN in 1814. His father was unidentified by name, but headed a military party of Cherokees at one time. A William STINNETT married a Nancy Carter (daughter of Baley Carter) in 1789 in Amherst Co. VA (just before a William STINNETT appeared in Rowan Co. NC). Henry may have been born in TN between that date and 1791. Conventional wisdom has Nancy Carter as the second wife of an earlier William STINNETT (1746). I have questioned that conventional wisdom without adequate response by those that have accepted and circulated it as fact over the years. Jim Crownover, 840 Inola Ct., La Habra, CA 90631.
