Calling all volunteers!

Many have expressed interest in enhancing the popular Smoky Mountain Historical Society In the Shadow of the Smokies cemetery publication index to include full names. Now with the power of the Internet, such a project can be accomplished with volunteers throughout the world.

The Smoky Mountain Historical Society board has initiated this project that includes posting the results on the Smoky Mountain Historical Society web page. Volunteers who have the publication can work on the project at their convenience on their home computers.

Those interested can contact cemetery@smokykin.com to be assigned a cemetery. Once assigned, enter the surname followed by the first as follows:

Surname, First name
in a simple text file.

In addition, any name considered to be a maiden name or widowed name included in the given name section should end with an asterisk (*). When the index is created, these names are automatically indexed a second time.

If you use Windows you can use the Windows Notepad. Save the data on a per file basis in a file named pagennn.txt where nnn is the page number (i.e. page434.txt for first page of Shady Grove). When complete, e-mail the results to cemetery@smokykin.com with the page number in the subject line and ask for another cemetery. Those who would like to help proof the results are sent completed files to be returned with corrections.

See an example of the Shady Grove cemetery first page named page434.txt.
