Notes

Rolfe, John (1585-1622), English colonist, born in Norfolk, England. He sailed to America in the expedition of the English navigator Sir George Somers (1554-1610) and reached Virginia in 1610. He became a planter and is said to have been the first colonist to begin the cultivation of the tobacco plant. In 1614 he married Pocahontas, the younger daughter of the American Indian chief Powhatan, and in 1616 he took her to England, where she died the following year. Rolfe returned to Virginia, where in 1621 he became a member of the first Council of State.
