Notes

Born in the 'Mac Cove' (Jones Cove) on the tract settled by his grandfather Archibald McMahan (1772-1853). The only memory A. R. McMahan had of his father was riding the plow as he turned his garden.

A. R. McMahan greatly improved the farm of his father. The original log house was enlarged and modernized. There were two fine springs where they got water. He planted an orchard of apples, peaches and pears and had a drying house to preserve the fruit.

A. R. McMahan was a Baptist and a strong Republican.

In 1912 he contracted smallpox and it took his eyesight. Thereafter, his wife was his eyes, doing his reading for him. In his last years, the McMahans left Jones Cove and moved to Alcoa where Mr. McMahan died.

Buried in Huff Cemetery.
