James joined the Federal Army in Sevierville, Tennessee, on 16 Oct 1862. He was a Private in the 2nd Tennessee Cavalry, B. Company under Captain Tom Jones and Colonel D. M. Ray. He was killed in battle near Decatur, Alabama. James as forty years old 5'10' in height, blue eyes, light hair, and fair complexioned.
