Notes

In 1784 James accompanied his mother and father, and his sister and four smaller brothers to the Yadkin Settlement in North Carolina. The next year he helped to bring them on pack animals to Shields Fort in Sevier County, Tennessee, via the Watauga and Traders Trail. In 1808, he settled in Indiana, building his own Shields Fort on the present site of Seymour, Indiana.

James is buried in Riverview Cemetery by the side of his wife.
