Notes

Henry VI, Emperor Of Germany a member of the Hohenstaufen family, succeeded his father, Frederick Barbarossa, in 1190. His marriage to Constance of Sicily gave him a claim to her kingdom. He also collected a large ransom from King Richard the Lion-Hearted of England, who was a prisoner of the duke of Austria. Henry strengthened his position in Italy through the aged Pope Celestine III. He also laid plans to keep the imperial throne in the Hohenstaufen family and to take Jerusalem as the start of a new crusade. But these projects ended suddenly when Henry died at 32.
