Notes

The will of Samuel Mateer of Boggs Township, written 11 April 1895, probated 28 April 1900, bequeathed to sons Samuel S. Mateer and Alexander M. Mateer, all property both real and personal excepting the house to wife Elizabeth for her lifetime; these sons to pay the following legacies: to son Ambrose M. Mateer, $1000; to daughters Ann Jane Calhoun and Margaret Wolff, $500 each; to daughter Elizabeth Banks, $200; sons J. E. B. Mateer, John H. Mateer, B. F. Mateer and R. M. Mateer have already been provided for. Executor: Robert M. Mateer. Witnesses: Robert Thompson and Robert A. Thompson. A codicil dated 27 June 1895 with the same witnesses provided a cash payment of $50.00 annually to the testator's widow and specified that son Samuel's wife, 'formerly Mary Houser shall have no claim on my estate.'

In addition to their large family Samuel and Elizabeth Mateer raised an orphan boy, Daniel Cogley born 7 September 1839. During the Civil War Daniel served three years in Company K 155th Pennsylvania with the Army of the Potomac.
