Notes

William Mateer moved from Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, to Holmes Township, Crawford County, Ohio, 'landing in Bucyrus on 30 August 1854.' He was a farmer in Holmes Township and superintendant of the first Sunday School organized at Spore, Ohio, in May 1870.

On 2 July 1857 Benjamin Sears and wife Malissa of Crawford County, Ohio, sold to William Mateer of Crawford County, for $800, four acres and a small sawmill in NW 1/4 Sec. 32 T 2 R 16 (Holmes Township), and on 20 July 1857 John Johnson and wife Susan with William Mateer and wife Catherine Ann sold this same property for $2208 to John Hershberger of Crawford County.

On 4 January 1867 William Mateer and wife Catherine A. of Crawford County, sold for $3600 to George O. Zigler and Joseph C. Sigler of Crawford County, property in the W 1/2 SW 1/4 Sec. 21 T 2 R 16 excepting 32 acres in the north end. Witnesses: William A. Mateer, Jacob Scroggs. The 32 acres thus reserved is located about one mile due east of Spore; this property is presumed to have been William's homestead as his wodow's death record lists her last residence as Spore.

The will of William Mateer of Holmes Township, written 10 June 1889, probated 26 October 1891, bequeathed all to his wife Catherine Ann Mateer her lifetime with full power to convert assets to her use and maintenance; at her decease all residue to grandson, Benjamin Franklin Mateer and his children. But should this grandson die childless before the death of the widow, then the whole estate was to be sold and the proceeds divided into five equal shares to be distributed as follows: one share to the children of brother James R. Mateer deceased; one to the children of half-sister Susan Zeigler deceased; one share to sister Sara Matilda Forcythe and heirs; one share to Nancy Ann Teal, wife of Abram Teal and her heirs (no relationship stated); and one share to Martha J. Mateer, widow of William Albert Mateer, and her heirs. Executrix: wife Catherine Ann Mateer. Witnesses: Charles J. Scroggs, Jacob Scroggs.
