After some time spent in working on various Morrow County farms he was able to buy his own place, a 73 acre tract in Harmony Township. In his later years he lived east of Iberia, Ohio.
In 1880 the Cooks were living in Harmony Township, Morrow County, Ohio; John W. aged 45, Matilda J. aged 46, Mary A. aged 17, Harriet M. aged 15, Charlotte E. aged 12, James M. aged 9 and John W. aged 6.
