He sold his farm and slaves (9 miles from Mobile Alabama) and came to Illinois, alone, in 1832 and then he returned to Alabama and brought his wife and 10 children back to Illinois with him by wagon train in March, 1834. In the spring of 1834 he settled on Section 5 near the present residence of Thomas Joiner. He built his first brick house in the spring of 1835 opposite the Thomas Joiner House. In 1836 James built the Methodist church building on his property. The neighbors provided the pews. At one time there was a large membership at this church.

Between the years 1834 and 1840 James Huskey purchased a total of 2,218.28 acres of land, 1,617.26 acres in Bird Township, Macoupin County, Illinois and 601.02 acres in South Palmyra Township, Macoupin County, Illinois mostly during the years 1834 and 1835.
