Preston and his family were listed in the 1850 through 1880 Federal Census of Sevier County, Tennessee.

Preston enrolled as a private 1 Oct 1863 in Company H, 9th Regiment of the Tennessee Cavalry Volunteers during the Civil War. He died at Camp Nelson, Kentucky of typhoid fever.
