Notes

On 16 November 1875, John H. Ownby made his will to dispose of his property both real and personal. In his will, he said, 'I will and bequeath to my wife Lucinda for the love and affection I have for Her all the property I have both real and personal during her life time, if she remained single, but if she marries to have no more than one child's part.' Also he wanted his land to be divided equally among his children at his wife's death with a share going to the children of his deceased daughter, Elizabeth Mayes.

John Ownby died of typhoid fever and was buried in the Ephraim McCarter Cemetery, Big Greenbrier section of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Two or three of his sons also died of typhoid fever.
